What is Acne Scar

Acne scars are inflamed blemishes that have swollen skin pores due to overstuffing with excess oil, dead skin and bacteria. Swollen pores will cause a break in the follicle wall.

If the lesions are small and shallow, scars created are minor and will heal quickly.

However, if the follicle wall is broken deeply, bigger lesions are formed because infected materials spill over to surrounding tissues. The skin tries to repair these lesions by forming new collagens.

However, these repairs are not as smooth as the original skin.

Types of Acne Scar and Its Symptoms

1. Rolling Scars

Rolling scars are sunken scars (atrophic lesions) with round and sloping edges. When there are many of these in the same region, the skin appears wavy and rolling. Rolling scars will commonly affect people with prolonged inflammatory acne (also known as cystic acne). As your skin ages, these scars become increasingly noticeable.

2. Boxcar Scars

Boxcar scars are also atrophic lesions. They are wide, box-shaped indentations with steep, deep and defined edges. It is more difficult to mix them into the surrounding skin due to these edges. They also look like chicken pox scars.

3. Icepick Scars

4. Hypertrophic Scars

Hypertrophic, or raised scars are filled with excessive amounts of collagen, happened when too much collagen is produced during acne wound healing. Keloid is also a type of raised scars. The difference is that a keloid scar is larger than its acne lesion source, while a hypertrophic scar is of the same size of its acne lesion source.
